History as an inspiration for the future

The Bodossaki Foundation is taking part in the 1821-2021 Initiative.

The ‘1821-2021 Initiative’ was set up in 2018 to mark the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution. It is the result of systematic cooperation between the following entities and Foundations: National Bank of Greece, Marianna V. Vardinogianni Foundation, Eugenidou Foundation, Visual Arts Foundation & Musikis B. & M. Theocharakis, Captain Vassilis & Carmen Constantakopoulos Foundation, Ioannou F. Kostopoulos Foundation, Social & Cultural Project Foundation (KIKPE), Lambraki Foundation, Athanasiou K. Laskaridis Foundation, Aikaterina Laskaridis Foundation, John S. Latsis Charitable Foundation, A. G. Leventis Foundation, Bodossaki Foundation, Education & European Culture Foundation, Michael N. Stasinopoulos Foundation – BIOHALKO, Onassis Foundation.

The goal of the ‘Initiative’ is to highlight how the anniversary of the Revolution should be an occasion for national reflection, as expressed in the axiom that History is a source of inspiration for the future. The 15 collaborating charitable, cultural and scientific institutions and the National Bank, together with more than 75 institutions in Greece and abroad, have over more than two and a half years co-created an integrated programme of more than 130 projects, with an emphasis on science, cultural heritage, music and the arts more broadly, as well as future prospects for the country.

Between October 2020 and September 2022, with the cooperation of scientific, research, academic and cultural bodies, conferences, publishing programmes, historical and visual exhibitions and musical performances are being organised, while educational/research programmes and scholarships will be supported. Abroad, in countries that contributed to the Greek Revolution (France, Switzerland, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, etc.), comparable bodies are planning similar projects in collaboration with the Initiative.

Each of the Foundations, as well as the National Bank, are preserving their individual identity, autonomy and objectives, supporting projects with which they have a particular association. Nonetheless they all believe that an example of cooperation, dialogue and unity needs to be presented in Greece and abroad.
