Criminal conciliation was established by Law 3500/2006, as amended by Law 4531/2018, and Law 5172/2025. However, in practice, the lack of incident management protocols, risk assessment tools, and specialized training leads to victims being insufficiently informed and to confusion as to its legal consequences. The Hellenic Police has been designated as the gatekeeper for its implementation and the Prosecutor’s Office as the implementer-mediator, while the referral of perpetrators to the National Centre for Social Solidarity (NCSS) makes social workers the active professionals in the field. The project addresses the need for information on, and training in, the use of criminal mediation and Restorative Justice (RJ) in cases of domestic violence (DV), highlighting gaps in the implementation of the existing legislation and proposing measures for improvement.
Target groups:
- Frontline professionals (police officers in Domestic Violence Units, social workers and employees of the NCSS in particular), CSOs active in the prevention and management of DV, people – regardless of gender – who are at risk of, or have already suffered, DV
- LGBTQI+ people
- Refugees
- People with Disabilities
- The general public
