Supporting older adults with intellectual disabilities and their carers

Demographic ageing in Greece, combined with the absence of specialized services for older adults with cognitive disabilities, creates a double care deficit: the individuals themselves experience premature ageing, dementia, psychological and mobility difficulties, while their caregivers (who are often elderly themselves) face extreme fatigue and uncertainty about the future.

The “Growing Older Together: Supporting People with Intellectual Disabilities and their Caregivers in Old Age” project is designed for those transitioning into or currently navigating their later years, along with their caregivers. An integrated active ageing methodology specially developed for the project is implemented to facilitate a smooth transition into older age, enhance functional independence and autonomy, and ensure dignity and continuity of care.

The project’s actions include:

  • Piloting a specialized laboratory for people with intellectual disabilities who are embarking on older age
  • Developing and implementing a methodology for assessing functional independence and psychosocial wellbeing
  • Implementing targeted actions to support and empower caregivers
  • Recording experiences and needs with a view to drawing up policy proposals and designing practical tools for institutions and practitioners.

The project is implemented by the Centre for Special Education of Children & Adults with Disabilities “Horizons” in the framework of the Thematic Grants Programme for Healthy Ageing, with the support of the Bodossaki Foundation, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation and the TIMA Charitable Foundation.
