Bodossaki Excellence Award 2026 | <\/strong>Social Sciences<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pinelopi (Penny) Koujianou Goldberg was born in Athens, Greece, in 1963, the oldest of three daughters of Dionissios Koujianos, a civil engineer, and Niki Bouzaki, an architect. She attended the German School of Athens and, upon graduation, took the Panhellenic Exams. Though she was admitted, ranking first, to the Department of Economics of the University of Athens, she chose instead to study in Germany, having received a five-year scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). She obtained a Diploma in Economics from the University of Freiburg and then moved to the United States for graduate studies, earning her PhD in Economics from Stanford University in 1992.<\/p>\n

Pinelopi Koujianou Goldberg has had a distinguished academic career, holding full professorships at Princeton, Columbia, and Yale, her current home. She is the William Nordhaus Professor of Economics and Global Affairs at Yale University. In 2018, she took leave from academia to serve for two years as Chief Economist of the World Bank Group.<\/p>\n

Her fields of specialization include international trade, development, industrial organization, and applied microeconomics more broadly. Her research has focused on policy-relevant questions in trade and development. Using a broad range of methodological approaches, she has provided insights into the determinants and effects of trade policies, trade and inequality, intellectual property rights protection in developing countries, exchange-rate passthrough, pricing to market, and international price discrimination. Her most recent research examines the resurgence of protectionism and industrial policy in the United States; trade, poverty, and inequality; the interplay between informality and trade liberalization in the presence of labor-market frictions; and discrimination against women in developing countries.<\/p>\n

She has held several leading roles in the profession, serving as Editor-in-Chief of the American Economic Review and as President of the Econometric Society. She is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, Distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research and the Center for Economic Studies in Munich, and a member of the Executive Committee of BREAD.<\/p>\n

Her distinctions include membership in the US National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and election as International Fellow of the British Academy. She has received Guggenheim and Sloan Fellowships, an honorary doctorate from the University of Freiburg, the 2003 Bodossaki Foundation Distinguished Young Scientist Award in Social Sciences, the 2025 Jean-Jacques Laffont Prize, and the A.SK Social Science Award.<\/p>\n
